Aparna Subramanian elected to the Board of Directors of Los-Angeles based Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA)
Aparna Subramanian is the first Indian and Asian to be elected to the Board of Directors of AMIA in the organization’s 34-year history. Her directorship will fall into effect from December 6th, 2024.
In 2019, she was awarded AMIA's George Blood L.P. Women in AV Archiving and Technology scholarship, which supports the advanced education and training of women seeking careers in the technical fields of audiovisual archiving. This scholarship supports the advanced education and training of women pursuing careers in the technical aspects of audiovisual archiving, and Aparna’s receipt of this award underscores her dedication to empowering future generations of women in this vital field.
The Association of Moving lmage Archivists (AMIA) is a professional association established in 1990 to advance the field of moving image archiving by fostering cooperation among individuals concerned with the collection, preservation, exhibition and use of moving image materials. AMIA’s nine-member board serve as volunteers steering the organization towards a sustainable future through sound governance and financial management policies, as well as making sure the organization has adequate resources to advance its mission. AMIA’s staff works closely with the Board, committees, and members to implement the mission. The Board oversees and ratifies the work of the committees through which the work of the organization is undertaken.
Aparna Subramanian is a Fulbright fellow, and alumni of NYU's Moving Image Archiving and Preservation program. She is an accomplished professional with a background in media preservation, collection management, and archival administration, with work experience of 15 years in India and USA. She is a recipient of multiple grants, scholarships, and awards from the Society of American Archivists, Film Noir Foundation and Midwest Archives Conference to name a few. Her expertise lies in integrating optimally best practices, strategies, and research to address the complexities at the intersection of policies, practices, and education concerning media preservation. Upon returning to India in 2021, Aparna served as a Technical Expert with KPMG India on the National Film Heritage Mission project at the National Film Archive of India until January 2023. She then spent a year consulting for a private company Monolith Technologies, providing consultation to film and audiovisual archives in the Southeast Asia region. Currently, she works as a Film Research Officer at the Film and Television Institute of India, bringing her expertise and advisory to the institution. She looks after audiovisual archiving and film festival submissions of FTII student’s films.
On this occasion, Mr. Dhiraj Singh, Director-FTII said, we are excited to know about selection of Aparna on the Board of Directors of The Association of Moving Image Archivists. Apart from being first Indian and Asian member, she is also FTII staff member, which is a great honour for the institution. We hope she will contribute to the organization’s mission and will ensure that the rich tapestry of moving image history is preserved for future generations.
