Film and Television Institute of India, Pune Organizes WAVES Masterclass on Hand-Painted Poster Designing at Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune
Pune, 7th March 2025: In a celebration of visual artistry and Indian cinema’s iconic film posters, the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, conducted a two-day Masterclass on Hand-Painted Poster Designing as part of the World Audio-Visual Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025. This event was hosted under FTII’s Centre for Open Learning (CFOL) in collaboration with Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune to engage students in the timeless craft of hand-painted film posters.
'Create in India Challenge - Season 1' (CIC) is part of WAVES, a Ministry of Information and Broadcasting initiative aimed at showcasing the creative talent of younger generations in the fields of art, digital media, and entertainment. The CIC includes competitions and masterclasses in numerous topics including animation, gaming, film, music, social media, advertising, broadcasting, radio, comics, AR/VR and AI among others. The ‘Film Poster Design Competition' comprising of three categories - Hand-painted, Digital and International (open to foreign nationals) serves as a focal point for educational institutions to revisit the classic artistry of Indian film posters.
The Film Poster Making Challenge not only provides a platform for artists to showcase their creativity but also offers significant recognition for outstanding works. In the Digital and International Poster category, the top 20 selected artworks will be displayed at the WAVES Summit, while the top 3 entries will receive prestigious awards, including cash prizes and digital certificates of appreciation. Competition for Hand-Painted Poster category will culminate in a live event where selected artists would create their artworks in real-time. The top three hand-painted posters will also receive exciting awards. All participants will receive a Digital Certificate of Appreciation, ensuring that every artist’s effort is recognized.
To promote the competition and raise awareness about this traditional art form, Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune organized a Poster Design Workshop on 7th and 11th March 2025. The workshop was led by the renowned poster artist Shri Subodh Guruji, a revered name in the world of Indian cinema posters having worked on numerous iconic projects and known for his contributions to films such as Raj Kapoor's classics. His expertise in hand-painted poster design continues to inspire generations of artists. Shri Guruji was joined by Shri Milind Damle, Associate Professor, FTII and the workshop was coordinated by Shri Ashutosh Kavishwar, HOD of Production Design.
The first day of the Masterclass welcomed around 30 students from Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, who were introduced to the world of hand-painted posters by Shri Subodh Guruji. The session began with an insightful introduction to the films of Raj Kapoor and their iconic posters by Shri Damle and followed by a live demonstration of poster design techniques by Shri Guruji. The interactive session allowed students to ask questions and learn from the extensive experience of the master artist.
The second day focused on student presentations of their own poster designs, followed by a discussion on their work. Shri Guruji and his team provided feedback and encouraged the students to continue exploring their artistic potential. The session concluded with the distribution of certificates to the participants.
The Masterclass was a unique opportunity for students to engage with this disappearing art form and showcase their creative interpretations of Indian cinema through hand-painted posters. FTII remains committed to promoting artistic learning and traditional forms of film-related visual culture.
