Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune under its ‘Centre For Open Learning (CFOL)’ announces course in “Basic Course in Film Appreciation” from 26-30 December 2025 in Lucknow.
Following are the details in this regard;
- Name of the Course: Basic Course in Film Appreciation
- Dates: 26 – 30 December 2025 (05 days)
- Timings: 10 am to 5.30 pm (1.30 to 2 pm will be lunch break)
- Minimum no. of participants: 15 (Course may not be conducted if there are less than 15 participants)
- Age: 18 years & above as on 01st December 2025 (participants born on or before 30th November 2007)
- Educational Qualification: HSC (12th pass). In exceptional cases, 10th pass may be considered
- Nationality: Indian
- Medium of Instructions: English & Hindi
- Venue: Mahendra Educational Pvt Ltd, CP-9, Vijayant Khand, Ayodhya Rd, Near Chandan

- Per Participant Course fee: Rs 7,000/-
Rs 5,000/- per participant for Ex Servicemen/ wards/ dependents of Serving / Retired Armed Forces Personnel / War Widows. All subject to document verification by UP Rajya Sainik Board.
Course fee is excluding lunch, tea/ coffee, snacks etc.
Note: Course fee of selected participants will be non-refundable, non-transferrable, non-adjustable, etc. under any circumstances Course fee of all the non – selected participants will be returned within 21 working days of the course commencement.
However, due to any reason, if the course is postponed OR cancelled by the organisers, course fee will be refunded.
- Mode of payment: Online through SBI Collect (along with application form).
- Due date & time to submit online application: 12th Dec. 2025, 6 pm IST. Application submitted after due date & time will not be considered.
- Selection Criteria: On First – Come – First – Served Basis. List of selected participants will be published on our website and selection emails will also be sent to all the selected participants.
(14) Certificates: All participants would be given participation certificate on successful completion of the course. Minimum 90% attendance is mandatory to get certificate.

(18) Course Director: Dr. Indranil Bhattacharya and Dr. Milind Damle,
Professor Indranil Bhattacharya is a scholar of Screen Studies and a filmmaker trained at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). He holds a PhD in Cinema Studies from the University of Westminster, London. His work explores the intersections of technology and aesthetics, with a particular focus on film sound, documentary practices, theories of realism, and creative media industries in the digital era.
Before entering academia, he worked extensively in the media sector as a documentary filmmaker, editor, and producer in broadcast television. He has since taught film theory and media production in leading South Asian universities and contributes regularly to Indian digital platforms on cinema and culture.
Dr. Milind Damle, Associate Professor, FTII, Pune. He is alumnus of FTII from 2004 batch and is having more than 20 years experience in the field of Radio, Cinema & Television. He is a film educator and is full time associated with FTII since 2012. Professionally he edited feature films and also directed & produced number of short films. His written and produced short films have been a part of many national and international film festivals and have won awards. His doctoral research is based on the song picturization techniques in films directed by Vijay Anand.

. In the Search box, search/Find FTII Fees Account and click submit.
2. In the payment category select “O11 Basic Course in Film Appreciation”.
3. Fill-up the application form with requisite details and proceed for payment.
4. Make necessary payment of Rs 7,000/- OR Rs 5,000/- as the case may be.
5. Once payment is done, please note "SBI collect Reference Number" (mentioned in payment confirmation receipt). This may be required for future reference.
6. If possible, digitally store the receipt of payment. This can be carried out in one of the following ways;
(i) by taking printout of receipt of payment, scan & save it
(ii) by taking screenshot of payment (if using mobile) or print screen (if using computer)
(iii) by simply taking a photograph from mobile
7. No document/ certificate related to educational qualification, age etc. is to be attached. Participants’ self – declaration in the application form is sufficient.

Course Contents
This course offers an introduction to film appreciation, film history, film analysis, and the fundamentals of film production—from concept to screen. It familiarizes participants with key developments in cinema and the evolution of cinematic language.
Students will learn to analyze selected films and understand the processes involved in filmmaking. The course deepens participants’ engagement with cinema across its aesthetic, creative, communicative, industrial, and commercial dimensions. It also develops the ability to contextualize audiovisual works and assess how visual and sonic elements create meaning and shape audience experience.
Core concepts such as cinematic space and time, editing, mise-en-scène, and sound design will be explored in detail. The course will also offer a brief introduction to key elements that aid in understanding and appreciating Hindi cinema.
By situating films within their historical, social, aesthetic, and technological contexts, the course trains students to read cinema critically and recognize its role within broader cultural and societal frameworks.
Teaching methods include film screenings, lectures supported by presentations and clips, and interactive discussions.
