Basic Course in Smartphone Filmmaking in Pune, from 09-13 March 2025
Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune under its ‘Centre For Open Learning (CFOL)’ announces “Basic Course in Smartphone Filmmaking” from 09-13 March 2025 at Vijay Tendulkar Writer’s Academy, Rambaug Colony, Near Doordarshan Kendra, Kothrud, Pune.
Following are the details in this regard;
- Name of the Course: Basic Course in Smartphone Filmmaking
- Dates: 09-13 March 2025
- Timings: 10 am to 5 pm (1 pm to 2 pm will be lunch break)
- Maximum no. of participants: 24 (Course will be conducted only if minimum strength of 20 is reached)
- Selection Criteria: On First – Come – First – Served Basis.
- Age: 18 years & above as on 01st March 2025 (participants born on or before 28 Feb. 2007)
- Educational Qualification: HSC (12th pass). In exceptional cases, 10th pass may be considered
- Nationality: Indian
- Medium of Instructions: English and Hindi.
- Venue: Vijay Tendulkar Writer’s Academy, Rambaug Colony, Near Doordarshan Kendra, Kothrud, Pune.
- Per Participant Course fee: Rs 7,000/-
Course fee of selected participants will be non-refundable, non-transferrable, non-adjustable, etc. under any circumstances. Course fee of all the non – selected participants will be refunded within 21 working days of the course commencement.
However, due to any reason, if the course is postponed OR cancelled by the organisers, course fee will be refunded.
Course fee is excluding breakfast, lunch, tea/ coffee, snacks etc.

- Due date & time: 21 February 2025, 6 pm IST. Application submitted after due date & time will not be considered.
- Communication with participants: All communications with the participants will be carried out through email only. List of shortlisted participants will be published on FTII website. Selection email will be sent to the selected participants on their registered email id.
- Certificates: Participants would be given participation certificate on successful completion of the course. Minimum 90% attendance is mandatory to get certificate.

- Limited Hostel accommodation for outstation participants: Rs 1,800/- (Rs. 300/- per day for 6 days) on triple sharing basis on our extended campus in Kothrud (5 Kms from main campus). Participants need to make to & fro self transport arrangements at their own cost.
Hostel Accommodation Fee is excluding breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea/ coffee, snacks etc. Hostel accommodation fee payment details will be shared separately with the participants who are selected & who need said accommodation, on First come first served basis.
- Course Director: Mr. Ajmal Jami
- Ajmal Jami is visual communication professional with three and a half decades of award winning work
- His career arc has spanned the the time of only state run Doordarshan and no private audio visual media to the present digital media era
- With a special interest in documentary storytelling , he has been engaged in making short films and working on projects many of which explore and document the human condition
- He has been conducting workshops on visual communication and cinematography, mobile journalism and filmmaking at front ranking universities and institutions.
- As HoD camera at Ndtv and before that , with Newstrack , India’s pioneering video magazine , he has been in the forefront capturing for posterity the course of major events including the Kargil war , disasters , humanitarian crises nationally and internationally , political upheavals .. the ordinary and extraordinary that have often defined history
.. As a core team member at NDTV he was looking at implementing the pioneering smartphone model in news operations through the different channels of the network
- As Course Director at Center for Open Learning , FTII , he has been conducting smartphone filmmaking and digital cinematography workshops all across India since 2018 with a diverse range of participants

- In the Search box, search/Find FTII Fees Account and click submit.
2. In the payment category select “C2 Basic Course in Smartphone Filmmaking”.
3. Fill-up the application form with requisite details and proceed for payment.
4. Make necessary payment of Rs 7,000/-.
5. Once payment is done, please note "SBcollect Reference Number" (mentioned in payment confirmation receipt). This may be required for future reference.
6. If possible, digitally store the receipt of payment. This can be carried out in one of the following ways;
(i) by taking printout of receipt of payment, scan & save it
(ii) by taking screenshot of payment (if using mobile) or printscreen (if using computer)
(iii) by simply taking a photograph from mobile
7. No document/ certificate related to educational qualification, age etc. is to be attached. Participants’ self – declaration in the application form is sufficient.

Course Contents
This course looks at imparting the basics of storytelling, the use of the phone as a film making device, lighting, sound and editing.
At the end of the course, participants will have a basic understanding of how to create a short film from concept through filming and final edit.
Day 1 -
- The language of cinema
- The act of ‘seeing ‘
- Visual vocabulary and its most basic constituent unit - the shot
- Meaning,, impact and psychology of each of these constituent units
- Static and moving camera. Stabilization - handheld and aids to effect stabilization
Day 2
- Perception and image . What works, what could be made to work better
- Composition and framing
- Guidelines
- Light … understanding light , its importance , psychological effects , using and working with artificial and natural light with intent and purpose
Day 3
- Colour .. meaning, psychological effect , use
- Sound .. Understanding sound ,importance , effect , working with sound , microphones
- Using the smartphone camera and its settings optimally -inbuilt and through apps
- Shots as cohesive groups. Scenes and sequences. Storyboard
Day 4
- Continuity and axis
- Editing on phone
- Beginning work on group films
Day 5
- working on group films
- Finalising for screening
- Screening and feedback
- Reviewing ground covered and looking at the road ahead
