Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune under its ‘Centre For Open Learning (CFOL)’ announces “Basic Course in Video Editing” from 17-29 March 2025 at Vijay Tendulkar Writer’s Academy, Rambaug Colony, Near Doordarshan Kendra, Kothrud, Pune .
Following are the details in this regard;
- Name of the Course: Basic Course in Video Editing
- Dates: 17-29 March 2025 (12 days)
- Timings: 10 am to 5 pm (1 to 2 pm will be lunch break)
- Max. no. of participants: 12 (Course will be conducted only if min. strength of 10 participants is reached)
- Age: 18 years & above as on 1st March 2025 (participants born on or before 28th February 2007)
- Educational Qualification: HSC (12th pass). In exceptional cases, 10th pass may be considered
- Nationality: Indian
- Medium of Instructions: English & Hindi
- Venue: Vijay Tendulkar Writer’s Academy, Rambaug Colony, Near Doordarshan Kendra, , Kothrud, Pune
- Sharing of Editing Machine: Two participants will share one Editing Machine
- Per Participant Course fee: Rs 18,000/-
Course fee is excluding lunch, tea/ coffee, snacks etc.
Course fee of selected participants will be non-refundable, non-transferrable, non-adjustable, etc. under any circumstances Course fee of all the non – selected participants will be returned within 21 working days of the course commencement.
However, due to any reason, if the course is postponed OR cancelled by the organisers, course fee will be refunded.
- Mode of payment: Online through SBI Collect (along with application form).
- Due date & time to submit online application: 17 February, 2025, 6 pm IST. Application submitted after due date & time will not be considered.
- Selection Criteria: On First – Come – First – Served Basis. List of selected participants will be published on our website and selection emails will also be sent to all the selected participants.
- Certificates: All participants would be given participation certificate on successful completion of the course. Minimum 90% attendance is mandatory to get certificate.

- Communication with participants: All communications with the participants will be carried out through email only. List of shortlisted participants will be published on FTII website and selection email will be sent to the selected participants on their registered email.
- Limited Hostel accommodation for outstation participants: Rs 1,800/- (Rs. 300/- per day for 14 days) on triple sharing basis on our extended campus in Kothrud (5 Kms from main campus). Participants need to make to & fro self transport arrangements at their own cost.
Hostel Accommodation Fee is excluding breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea/ coffee, snacks etc. Hostel accommodation fee payment details will be shared separately with the participants who are selected & who need said accommodation, on First come first served basis.
- Course Director: Dr. Milind Damle
Dr. Milind Damle, Associate Professor, FTII, Pune. He is alumnus of FTII from 2004 batch and is having more than 20 years experience in the field of Radio, Cinema & Television. He is a film educator and is full time associated with FTII since 2012. Professionally he edited feature films and also directed & produced no. of short films. His written and produced short films have been a part of many national and international film festivals and have won awards. His doctoral research is based on the song picturization techniques in films directed by Vijay Anand.

. In the Search box, search/Find FTII Fees Account and click submit.
2. In the payment category select “C1 Basic Course in Video Editing”.
3. Fill-up the application form with requisite details and proceed for payment.
4. Make necessary payment of Rs 18,000/-
5. Once payment is done, please note "SBI collect Reference Number" (mentioned in payment confirmation receipt). This may be required for future reference.
6. If possible, digitally store the receipt of payment. This can be carried out in one of the following ways;
(i) by taking printout of receipt of payment, scan & save it
(ii) by taking screenshot of payment (if using mobile) or print screen (if using computer)
(iii) by simply taking a photograph from mobile
7. No document/ certificate related to educational qualification, age etc. is to be attached. Participants’ self – declaration in the application form is sufficient.
8. Terms & conditions: By agreeing to the terms & conditions in the application form, participants are confirming that they have read & understood the website advt. They are eligible to apply and fulfil all the requirements as stated in the advt. Further, participants agree that decision of FTII Director regarding admission to the course and its conduction in all respect will be final.
Course Contents
Since the beginning of cinema, editing has been at the heart of the filmmaking process. This short course is intended as a brief introduction to the salient aspects of video editing, both practical as well as conceptual. The participants' time during the course will be divided between practical exercises, conceptual discussions and film screenings.
The course will include:
● Theory (conceptual/aesthetic as well as technical)
● Practical (ingesting, editing and exporting material/a project)
● Screenings of curated films/ videos over the internet.
The theory inputs would be very introductory, since the time is very short, but the idea is to get the participants acquainted with (and hopefully interested in) these topics.
Topics
● A brief history of editing and the role of editor
● Understanding of the evolution editing during Silent and Sound era
● Continuity: Basic principles of Editing
● Time and Space in cinema
● Editing for Storytelling
● Basic editing techniques
● Transition and Its’ Use in narrative
● Basics of using sound in editing
● Study of edited sequences
Technical topics will include the following:
● Getting started with Non-linear Video Editing Systems/Software programs
● Creating Projects (File systems, Formats, Speed, Compression)
● Workspaces and Workflows
● Transferring and Importing Digital Video Assets
● Editing (Preview, Selection, Sequence Creation, Video-Audio, Trim, rough cut, final cut etc.)
● Exporting your Edited Sequence for different platforms
● Discussion on the editing exercises by the students
Participants will work on supplied materials only.
By the end of the course, participants should have a fair understanding of the art and craft of editing, while also being able to approach their work with more confidence and rigor.
