About the Course/ Workshop

This intensive five-day workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of moving image preservation, designed to bridge theoretical foundations with practical applications in the field of film archiving and conservation. The program brings together leading practitioners and archivists from across India to share their expertise in preservation workflows, metadata standards, digital restoration techniques, and institutional practices.

Course Structure

The workshop combines daily presentations, hands-on demonstrations, film screenings, and institutional site visits, culminating in a certificate distribution ceremony. Each session is structured to allow for interactive discussion and practical engagement with the material or about the material.

Background:

The intention of the workshop is to equip participants with foundational knowledge and critical tools to responsibly evaluate, preserve, and restore audiovisual materials in digital environments, particularly within the diverse landscape of India’s audiovisual heritage. Emphasis is placed on informed decision-making, ethical restoration practices, and long-term sustainability of digital assets. The program aims to support emerging practitioners in developing a clear, practical understanding of digital preservation responsibilities within archives, cultural institutions, and independent initiatives.

Intended Audience

This workshop is designed for film students, early-career archivists, librarians, curators, filmmakers, and cultural heritage professionals who wish to develop foundational knowledge in moving image preservation. Participants from academic institutions, cultural organizations, and independent practitioners with an interest in safeguarding India's audiovisual heritage are encouraged to attend.

Day 1 – Introduction to Moving Image Preservation

Participants will gain a foundational understanding of archiving, its purpose, and key institutions and professional bodies in India and globally. The day explores archival functions, workflows, differences between archives and libraries, and challenges of preserving film, new media, and born-digital materials.

Day 2 – Metadata in Moving Images

This day focuses on the role of metadata in film preservation, cataloguing, and film histories, especially within the Indian context. Through examples and screenings, participants learn how ancillary materials and non-filmic sources enrich metadata and help reconstruct silent and fragmented cinema histories.

Day 3 – Digital Film Preservation

Participants are introduced to the technical fundamentals of digital preservation, including formats, codecs, storage, documentation, and migration strategies. The session emphasizes best practices, standards, risk assessment, and a holistic approach to safeguarding digital audiovisual content for the future.

Day 4 – Digital Film Restoration & Color Grading

This hands-on demonstration covers the complete digital restoration workflow, from damage analysis to final mastering. Participants learn professional techniques in restoration, color grading, and quality control, with real-world examples and industry-standard tools.

Day 5 – NFAI & NFHM Exposure

The final day provides institutional insight into the National Film Heritage Mission and NFDC-NFAI’s preservation work. Through guided tours of vaults, digitization facilities, and libraries at NFAI and FTII, participants gain practical exposure to large-scale archival operations and conclude with certification.
