Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune under its ‘Centre For Open Learning (CFOL)’ announces course in “Basic Orientation Course for Cinema/ Television Lighting Assistants” from 24 February – 01 March 2025 at Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, Pune .
Following are the details in this regard;
- Name of the Course: Basic Orientation Course for Cinema/ Television Lighting Assistants
- Dates: 24 February – 01 March 2025 (26 February will be a Break Day)
- (2) Timings: 9.30 am to 6 pm with lunch break from 1.30 to 2 pm
- (3) No. of participants: 20. (Course will be conducted only if min. strength of 16 is reached)
- (4) Age: Participants must be 18 years or above in age as on 01st February 2025.
- (5) Educational Qualification: 10th std. pass
- (6) Nationality: Indian
- (7) Venue: TV Engineering Department, FTII Main Campus, Law College Road, Pune – 411004
- (8) Per participant fee: Rs 3,000/-
- (9) Limited Hostel accommodation for outstation participants: Rs 1,800/- (Rs. 300/- per day for 6 days) on triple sharing basis on our extended campus in Kothrud (5 Kms from main campus). Participants need to make to & fro self transport arrangements at their own cost.
Fee and Hostel Accommodation Fee is excluding breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea/ coffee, snacks etc. Hostel accommodation fee payment details will be shared separately with the participants who are selected & who need said accommodation, on First come first served basis
Fee of selected participants will be non-refundable, non-transferrable, non-adjustable, etc. under any circumstances. Fee of all the non – selected participants will be refunded within 21 working days of the course commencement. Also, due to any other reason, if the course is cancelled by FTII, full fee will be refunded.
(10) Last date to apply: 30th January 2025 by 6 pm
(11) Medium of Instructions: English and Hindi.
(12) Selection Criteria: First – Come – First – Served basis. Selected candidates would be communicated by email. List of the selected participants will be published on FTII website.
(13) Certificates: All participants would be given participation certificate on successful completion of course. Minimum 90% attendance is mandatory.

(15) Communication with participants: All communications with the participants will be carried out through email only. List of shortlisted participants will be published on FTII website and selection email will be sent to the selected participants on their registered email.
(16) How to apply:
a. Click open the link – https://www.onlinesbi.sbi/sbicollect/icollecthome.htm OR visit www.onlinesbi.sbi and further click on “SB Collect” which is at the top left, vertically 06th from left to right. In the Search box, search/ Find FTII Fees Account and click submit.
b. In the payment category select “C1 Filmmaking Asst. Course for light boys or girls”
c. Fill-up the application form with requisite details and proceed for payment.
d. Make necessary payment of Rs 3,000/-
e. Once payment is done, please note "SBI collect Reference Number" (mentioned in payment confirmation receipt). This may be required for future reference.
f. If possible, digitally store the receipt of payment. This can be carried out in one of the following ways;
(i) by taking printout of receipt of payment, scan & save it
(ii) by taking screenshot of payment (if using mobile) or print screen (if using computer)
(iii) by simply taking a photograph from mobile
(iv) check your bank account to confirm whether money (fee) has been deducted or not
(v) After a day or two, once again check to see whether money (fee) has been refunded.
(vi) In case of refund, it is transaction failure and so, once again apply for course afresh.
g. No document/ certificate related to educational qualification, age etc. is to be attached. Participants’ self – declaration in the application form is sufficient.
h. Terms & conditions: By agreeing to the terms & conditions in the application form, participants are confirming that they have read & understood the website advt. They are eligible to apply and fulfill all the requirements as stated in the advt. Also, it is presumed that participants will be staying and or attending the course at their own risk & cost and will not be held responsible for anything or matter of what-so-ever nature. Further, participants agree that decision of Director, FTII regarding admission to the course and its conduction in all respect will be final.
Course Director: Dr. Bishwa B Behura
Dr. Bishwa B Behura is a Cinematographer and Associate Professor at FTII Pune. He has done his Diploma in Motion Picture Photography form Biju Pattnaik Film & Television Institute of Odisha, Cuttack. He also completed Masters in Journalism & Mass Communication and PhD in “Study of Visual Approach in Santosh Sivan's Films”. Before joining FTII, Pune, Dr. Behura has worked in several fiction & non-fiction productions in Mumbai film Industry. He also worked in Anwar Jamal Kidwai Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia University. Dr Behura has published several research papers in Scopus indexed and UGC CARE listed journals. He is well-versed in Digital Cinematography and possesses extensive knowledge of the latest camera and lighting equipment, as well as their applications in filmmaking. He is associated with FTII since 2012.
Course Details:
- Introduction to film set and crew roles in film-making.
- Overview of responsibilities and expectations of a Lighting Assistant.
- Lighting workflow on a film or television set with role of Lighting Assistant on set.
- Introduction to power sources (Voltage ratings, current, wattage, connectors) and cables, power distribution boards (Trolley Board) for lighting setups and Key safety protocols.
- Exploring light properties like color temperature, quality, intensity etc. and practical understanding of light behavior.
- Basic light placement & angling techniques. Key light, fill light, backlight and practical lights
- Working with natural and artificial lighting.
- Introduction to different types of lights like Tungsten, HMI, LED, Fluorescent, etc. and their specific uses with technical specifications and basic features.
- Use of accessories like stands, clamps, cutters, barn doors, diffusers, filters, gels, flags, reflectors etc.
- Techniques for positioning, rigging, and cutting light in indoor and outdoor scenarios.
- Demonstration of track & trolley along – with chipping, leveling for stability & smoothness.
- Checking cables & connectors for wear & tear and cleaning & storing lighting equipment & accessories. Replacing bulbs & fuses.
- Participants work in teams to light a small shooting set under the guidance of instructors.
- Review and feedback session to analyze learning outcomes.
