Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, under its ‘Centre for Open Learning (CFOL)‘ initiative, announces Foundation Course in Screenplay Writing (Offline) in Delhi.

Following are the details in this regard;

1. Name of the Course: Foundation Course in Screenplay Writing (Offline)
2. Dates: 11-21 November 2024 (10 days)
3. Timings: 10 am to 5 pm
4. Total no. of participants: 24 (Course will not be conducted if there are less than 20 participants)
5. Nationality: Indian
6. Medium of Instructions: The medium of instruction would be English and Hindi. Participants are expected to have adequate knowledge of English and/ or Hindi as regards to reading, writing & speaking.
7. Age: 18 years & above as on 01^st November 2024
8. Educational Qualifications: HSC (12^th pass), in exceptional cases 10^th pass will also be considered
9. Venue: Triveni Auditorium, Triveni Kala Sangam, 205, Tansen Marg, Todermal Road Area, Mandi House, Delhi, 110001

Fees: Rs 17,500/- per participant (base fee = Rs 14831/- and GST = Rs 2669/-)   

 Course fee is excluding breakfast, lunch, tea/ coffee, snacks etc.

Course fee of selected participants will be non-refundable, non-transferrable, non-adjustable, etc. under any circumstances. Course fee of all the non – selected participants will be refunded within 21 working days of the course commencement.

         However, due to any reason, if the course is postponed OR cancelled by the  

         organisers, course fee will be refunded.

13. Faculty Member: Shri Sudipto Acharyya

Sudipto Acharyya has studied cinema at FTII Pune, with specialization in Direction

and Screenplay Writing (1997-2000). He has completed his MA in Film Studies from

Jadavpur University, Kolkata. His Diploma film HARBOUR LINE was part of No

Masala Touring Film Festival in Germany. It was exhibited at the Asia-Europe Short

Film Festival-2007, Washington DC, organised by Indian Embassy.

His first independent production is Weekend Chill, a digital film made with crowd

fund. He has directed several short films & one feature length film for television and

other institutions.

Sudipto has a long engagement with teaching Cinema in various institutions like

FTII-Pune, SRFTI-Kolkata, Roop Kala Kendro -Kolkata, Kolkata Film & Television

Institute and Center for Film & Television (Allahabad University). He is currently a

Senior Faculty and Head of Affiliations-Short Course Unit at Whistling Woods

International-Mumbai. His workshops on Film Appreciation, Documentary History:

Ethics and Aesthetics and Short Film Screenplay Writing are well attended by film

students across the country.

His recent academic papers on cinema are published in several international

scientific journals on Cinema and were invited to conferences at film schools like

Lithuania Music and Theatre Academy-Vilnius, Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts &

Humanities-Kaunas University of Technology-Lithuania, Nanyang Technological

University-Singapore, Dodge College of Film and Media Arts-Chapman University,

Witwatersrand University-Johannesburg and Bilgi University-Istanbul.

He is part of an Artistic Research project involving BRICS nation that looks at social

interstices with the help of cinematic practices.

Sudipto Acharyya served as Head of Jury, International and National Feature Film

Competition at Nepal International Film Festival, Kathmandu in March-April 2022

and then as Jury-Chairman for the 5th South Asian Short Film Festival at Kolkata in

August 2022.

14. How to apply:

2. Search/Find FTII Fees Account in Educational institutions name and click submit.

3. In the payment category select “O3 Foundation Course in Screenplay Writing O.”

4. Fill-up the application form with requisite details and proceed for payment.

5. Make necessary payment of Rs 17,500/-.

6. Once payment is done, please note "SBcollect Reference Number" (mentioned in payment confirmation receipt). This may be required for future reference. 

7. If possible, digitally store the receipt of payment. This can be carried out in one of the following ways;

(i) by taking printout of receipt of payment, scan & save it

(ii) by taking screenshot of payment (if using mobile) or printscreen (if using computer)

(iii) by simply taking a photograph from mobile

8. No document/ certificate related to educational qualification, age etc. is to be attached. Participants’ self – declaration in the application form is sufficient.

9. Terms & conditions: By agreeing to the terms & conditions in the application form, participants are confirming that they have read & understood the website advt. They are eligible to apply and fulfil all the requirements as stated in the advt. Also, it is presumed that participants will be staying and or attending the course at their own risk & cost and FTII will not be held responsible for anything or matter of what-so-ever nature. Further, participants agree that decision of FTII Director regarding admission to the course and its conduction in all respect will be final.

15. Communication with participants: All communications with the participants will be carried out through email only. List of shortlisted participants may be published on FTII website and selection email will be sent to the selected participants on their registered email id.
16. Accommodation: Outstation participants may please note Triveni Kala Sangam may facilitate for accommodation in Delhi on additional payment. Please contact Ms. Surbhi, Triveni Kala Sangam, on 99588 31338 for the same.
17. Participants need to assure general decency, decorum etc. on the campus. Failing to do so will lead to cancellation of admission without refunding course fee apart from taking internal disciplinary action and dealing the matter as per law of the land. All rights in this regard are reserved with FTII.
18. Certificates: Participants would be given participation certificate on successful completion of the course which will carry logo of FTII & CFOL and will be jointly signed by FTII Director and the Course Director. Minimum 90% attendance is mandatory to get certificate.

Course Contents

Screenplay Writing course is for all those individuals who have a story to tell the world and has aspirations of becoming an Independent Film maker.

This Workshop will equip the participants with crucial storytelling tools, sharpen the art & craft of writing so that their stories gather wings and reach a wider audience.

Course Highlights:

• Analysing Short Film Structure

• Mode of writing for Screenplay (as opposed to novel/journalistic writing)

• Understanding TIME in cinema and it’s importance for writers.

• Aristotle’s Poetics for Screen writers

• Scene Construction

• Building believable and complex characters

• Plot and Structure

• Analysing Narrative tools and their poetics (Mystery/Suspense/Surprise/Irony etc.)

• Developing a Short Film Story and Screenplay (Final Submission)

There will be FOUR practical submissions other than the final submission that include:

1. An incident Report

2. One Space-One Time-One Action

3. Characterisation

4. Plot/Structure Exercise

The Final Submission of each student will be guided by the Course Director.

This course will have a combination of classroom lectures, writing exercises, film viewing and analysis.
